A Dog Used by God
Recently, three brave volunteers joined the Light America Team in
Illinois for a two week intensive focus on the residential areas
surrounding the Southwest Chicago Church. This was a part of the
church’s preparation for evangelistic meetings which will start in
April 2008.
One night during a heavy snowfall a gated community close to the
church left its gates “open” so the snowplows could clear the
streets inside. At one “castle” a lady and her three children
invited Maka and I inside to the warmth. As she wrote a check for
her purchases we all rejoiced at the timeliness of our arrival and
how God provided open gates for us!
Upon leaving the house the family dog, Finney, suddenly jumped up,
snatched my glove out of my hand, and was off like a bolt of
lightning! My first thought was, “Lord, what an embarrassing thing
to happen. Why would you let something like this happen?” Maka
waited in the driveway as I tried to coax the dog to return my
glove.
I was still negotiating with Finney when a man drove up and parked
outside one of the four garage doors at the end of the house.
“What are you people doing here?” He asked.
“Finney took my glove!” I called out. The man looked incredulous
that I had called his dog by name! But he turned and walked toward
the front door where his wife and three children waited.
Before I could explain further about the stolen glove the lady
called out: “Was I not supposed to get my books this evening?” And
sure enough, her books were still in my arms.
It was no surprise that my glove was promptly retrieved from Finney
as soon as the lady had the books.
We were all very thankful: the family for their books, and Maka and
I for God’s gracious way of preventing an honest mistake! Our Lord
works in very unique ways.
